Back in pre-pandemic, midst-career times, I brought people together from businesses, institutions and government to establish England's first carbon-negative Local Industrial Strategy in York and North Yorkshire.
We didn't set out with any aspiration beyond well-meaning growth of jobs and businesses. But this remarkable ambition to be carbon negative emerged by imagining a thriving future together and recognising our agency in the present.
Eventually, however, I abandoned any faith I had that we could grow our way out of the mess we are in.
I realised that this notion, a product of our industrial growth society, has undermined the very foundations of life on the planet. We have six years of carbon budget left to remain within 1.5 degrees of warming.
Six years.
And climate change is just the most high profile of the nine planetary boundaries we are overshooting or about to.
As the founder and curator of a radical book club for nature writing I have an intimate, often painful, understanding of the profound impact we are having on the natural world.
Yet, we are still not meeting most of the global population's basic social needs.
I knew we needed a more radical approach than crossing our fingers that science and technology will come up with a solution. We need to address the 'how' and the 'why', not just the 'what'.
So, I began working in collaboration with others (hence the '& Co') to develop a more viable way of enabling businesses to create wellbeing as well as value, by applying the principles of Doughnut Economics and regenerative design.
I now help make sense of these times by telling stories, hosting collaborative experiences and nurturing relationships that allow us to respond by drawing on something deep within ourselves.
